Young people making a film

The Learning, Engagement and Development team at Tyneside Cinemas now has scope to be more ambitious. Extensive refurbishment has created 3 cinemas, a digital lounge, two dedicated learning spaces, two post production rooms and a permanent exhibition interpreting the history of newsreels. These are examples of the team’s work:

Learning Programme – events and workshops for 15 - 19 year olds supporting the national curriculum; introductory, intermediate and advanced level courses in film appreciation and practical skills; Film Quiz; Silverscreen for the over 60s

Projects - a range of media projects working with young people and communities. A Trip Down Coastworth Road is one example. 14-year-olds are making a documentary about their area, a film that illustrates the impact of faith on the every day lives of local Muslim, Orthodox Jewish and Christian communities Gateshead.

Northern Stars
- the filmmakers' academy for the region's most talented 15-18 year olds; a training programme that includes a residential and a series of production opportunities, working alongside  regional and national industry professionals.

Heritage
In addition to tours of the Tyneside, NewsReal is engaging pupils and teachers at KS2 with filmmaking working alongside professional filmmakers to create their own short films. All participating teachers on this 3 year project are provided with a resource pack and InSET training.
